A New York judge has ruled that a drug maker can get a “special prescription” from a U. S. health care practitioner to help it avoid “chemical birth defects” and “injury.”
Marilyn Schmitz, a spokeswoman for Eli Lilly and Co. in New York, said she would not be surprised if Pfizer’s drug Viagra, the world’s most-prescribed erectile dysfunction drug, were to have a special prescription for men with a rare inherited eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa.
Schmitz said it is unlikely that the drug maker would receive a special prescription, since Viagra is a prescription drug and can only be obtained from a doctor.
Schmitz said the company is also trying to get a “special prescription” for a woman with a rare inherited eye condition called retinitis pigmentosa.
She added: “I am not aware of any such prescription for a woman with a rare inherited eye condition.”
Lilly said it would not be surprised if Pfizer’s Viagra was to be prescribed for a woman with a rare inherited eye condition, or a man with the condition who has a rare inherited eye condition.
Schmitz said it is “not feasible” to prescribe a woman with a rare inherited eye condition, even if a drug is prescribed, because it is rare for a woman to have a rare inherited eye condition.
The drug’s manufacturer, Bayer, said in a statement on Thursday that it had been working on a special prescription for a woman who has been diagnosed with the condition since at least 2010.
Schmitz said the company is “committed to ensuring that women who have inherited eye conditions who are suffering from the condition will not become pregnant or are at risk of developing the condition.”
Schmitz said she had not yet received a prescription for the drug to treat a rare inherited eye condition, but she said she did not plan to use it, and she “is happy to continue providing women with this opportunity to get help.”
In an e-mail to Reuters, Pfizer said it would not be surprised if the company did receive a special prescription from a U. health care practitioner to treat a rare inherited eye condition.
